Jewellery label MLD makes pieces that would make your nonna proud
Mel D’Alessandro is a Melbourne-based lady who cooks a fine eggplant parmigiana, likes a good crime series and has a very cute cat named Bruce. She also happens to be a very talented jeweller whose label, MLD, is becoming renowned for its distinctly Italian flavour. Inspired by her heritage, Mel’s pieces are influenced by the years spent trawling through her mum, dad and grandmothers’ collections of Italian trinkets, charms and costume jewellery. Drawing the connections between then and now, she takes these pieces that are often a sentimental part of her childhood memories and relationships with her family,...
We love the bold, exciting work of New York-based multidisciplinary designer Alex Proba
Alex Proba is one of those designers whose work you look at and just find yourself whispering, ‘how?’. The very definition of multidisciplinary, Alex is a German-born, Brooklyn-based designer who, under the self-titled moniker Studio Proba, pumps out incredible work in the realms of product, graphic, environmental and furniture design. Her client list runs strong, having worked with the likes of Mother New York, Target, Google and Kickstarter. She’s exhibited her work in Milan and London, and this year was shown as part of Assembly, London Design Fair’s first US Pavilion. And did we mention she’s currently the...
Drifting through Sean Meilak's geometric, architectural, dream-like spaces
Melbourne artist Sean Meilak’s work is like some kind of beautiful day dream. Whether he’s constructing compositions in plaster cast or rendering a two-dimensional still life drawing, we’re left feeling intrigued and transported to a dream-like space. We liken it to a feeling we imagine we’d get drifting through a Magritte painting or a Fassbinder film set; Sean’s multidisciplinary work is like a big head nod to a vast platter of modern art, design and film greats.
The geometric, architectural forms that Sean explores in his works are dense with mystery, intrigue and reference. He...
Remembering Sister Corita Kent's positively influential artwork and punk spirit
When you think of the kind of art a devout nun would make, do you imagine work that is colourful, humorous and dripping with punk spirit? We’re going to guess ‘no’! But with works that liken the Virgin Mary to a juicy tomato and communion wafers to potato chips, Sister Corita Kent was one bad ass nun and an inspirational woman artist we should all be taking cues from right now.
Corita was an art teacher at LA’s now defunct Immaculate Heart College, from 1946 — 1968. She then moved to Boston to continue exploring...
Bright, cheerful retro-style illustrations from Lan Truong
Lan Truong creates incredibly calming and beautiful still life drawings. She’s an illustrator and graphic designer based in Portland, Oregon, drawing for clients and for fun. With a focus on geometry, lines and minimal forms, her work is alluring in its simplicity. Taking inspiration from everyday life, Lan draws her scenes and pares back until they’re crisp, clean images with a touch of cheeky humour.
Lan’s got a few different styles under her belt, varying from solid, textural fills with halftones and simple, delicate linework, to crispy ink-like brushwork with pops of gradient colour. We’re in love...
